Dhirubhai Ambani worked for a firm in Yemen before relocating to Mumbai and establishing his own spice business in 1958. He returned and aided his father in starting a polyester filament yarn (PFY) manufacturing enterprise. He began his career with ‘Reliance Industries in 1981. He was instrumental in Reliance’s backward integration strategy, which began with textiles and progressed to polyester fiber and, finally, petrochemicals. He managed the development of 51 new world-class manufacturing facilities that used various technologies, significantly boosting Reliance’s manufacturing capacity. He also had a role in the establishment of ‘Reliance Infocomm Limited,’ a corporation devoted to information and communication technologies.


After the firm was divided between the two brothers, his younger brother acquired management of the business, known as ‘Reliance Communications Limited.’ In 2008, his company, ‘Reliance Industries,’ spent $111.9 million for a cricket franchise in ‘The Indian Premier League’ (Mumbai Indians). He served on the boards of directors of the ‘Bank of America Corporation and the ‘International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations.’ Moreover, he served as chairman of the ‘Board of the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore’ (IIMB). He revolutionized Indian network communications by designing the digital architecture for a 4G network and launching ‘Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited,’ or ‘Jio,’ established in September 2016. His business, ‘Reliance,’ has partnered with several global corporations, including ‘B.P. plc,’ ‘Niantic Inc.,’ ‘Network 18,’ and ‘Eros International.’

Mukesh Ambani vision culminated in the development of Jamnagar, India’s largest community-based petroleum refinery.
