McLaren 720S: Today’s Greatest Supercar
McLaren 720S is a low-weight exotic supercar by McLaren Automotive, England. It is part of the McLaren Automotive “Super Series” of automobiles and was launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. This benchmark supercar still wins the title of “Today’s Greatest Supercar.”
McLaren’s latest Super Series surprised everyone by paralleling some of the world’s fastest and more expensive supercars. Here are the 5 reasons why:
1. Comfortability
You must be thinking that a 700 plus hp car would be too uneasy to drive but thanks to McLaren’s incredibly advanced suspension, the 720S drives just ecstatically fine. The cabin and seats are comfortable. A sports car can tend to feel claustrophobic but the 720S Spider has a piece of glass on the convertible top that can become opaque. The Coupé can also be optioned giving the cabin a nice and open feeling.
2. Featherweight
Supercars must be lightweight and have a better power-to-weight ratio that increases its efficiency. The one-piece carbon-fiber platform of McLaren 720S supplements a unibody steel construction and is incredibly lightweight yet tough to keep it stable. The dry weight of the 720S is an incredibly low 2,828 pounds with all of the lightweight components (most sports cars weigh between 3,200 – 3,800 pounds).
3. Remarkable Engine
No supercar is complete without its engine and the 720S has a whopper – a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 710 hp (or even more reaching to 800hp) and 568 pound-feet of torque. The McLaren 720S can cover up to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, 124 mph in just 7.8 seconds, and reach a top speed of 212 mph. With the roof down, the thrill of the V8 engine is maximized and there is virtually no noticeable or measurable tradeoff in performance.
4. Lightning-Fast speed
Press the right pedal to the floor and see 720S as it takes off as if it is a space shuttle. It does not slow down but after attaining a speed of 212 mph. The benchmark 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in just 2.5 seconds. Braking is equally as remarkable, as the McLaren is fitted with four carbon-ceramic brakes at each corner.
McLaren’s seven-speed gear is one of the best in the world. Gear changes so quickly that the car has already had time to watch you blink and cue up the next gear. Even in automatic mode, there is no feeling of the car going through the gears.
Run records
2.9 seconds on with a top speed of 212 mph, McLaren 720S is one of the fastest cars in the world. Other run times recorded were; 9.788 seconds at 147.28 mph and the fastest of 9.733 seconds at 146.72 mph. How fast is it? Well, it’s faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, and the McLaren P1, all of which covered 1/4 mile in 9.8 seconds.
5. Incredible Handling Dynamics
Heavyweight halts the handling dynamics. Therefore, in the making of the McLaren 720S, excessive weight was removed and a sophisticated suspension system called Proactive Chassis Control III was installed to guarantee a perfect balance of handling the ride. The 720S is equipped with a premium suspension at each corner, which provides sufficient tire contact throughout its motion. The body roll is modulated by processors that continuously monitor conditions to nearly abolish body roll while enabling the adaptive dampers to optimize ride dynamics – the 720S has zero body roll in corners yet it rides better than any supercar on the highway. An Active Dynamics Panel allows the rider to choose between Comfort, Sport, and Track to facilitate the manual mode although the ride has an automatic system function.
The 720S uses electro-hydraulic power steering, which is considered to be the best among any supercar. When it’s time for high-speed driving, the steering still communicates with the ride, inspiring confidence to keep the accelerator pedal down. McLaren has mastered how to design excellent steering, an example for other automobile companies.
In the end
Extraordinary carbon-fiber construction, world-class turbocharged engine, remarkable performance, lightning speed, and incredible handling dynamic. There isn’t more than you can ask for, and that is why the McLaren 720S still owns the title as “Today’s Greatest Supercar”. And with all these incredible features, how much is a McLaren 720S price? Well, its starting price is $280,000! Impressive!
