Gaspard Ulliel

Gaspard Ulliel was a French actor who lived from November 25, 1984, until January 19, 2022. He is most known for playing juvenile Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising (2007) and fashion entrepreneur Yves Saint Laurent in the biopic Saint Laurent (2014). He is also the face of Chanel’s men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel. The forthcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight will play Anton Mogart/Midnight Man (2022).

In 2002 and 2003, Ulliel received a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor. In 2004, he was awarded the prize for his work in A Very Long Engagement. For his part in It’s Only the End of the World, he received the César Award for Best Actor in 2017. In 2015, he was knighted by the French Order of Arts and Letters.

José Dinis Aveiro, Ronaldo’s father, was the equipment manager for the local team Andorinha. Ronaldo was diagnosed with a cardiac problem at the age of 15 that required surgery, although he was only out for a short time and recovered well. He began his career with Madeira’s Clube Desportivo Nacional before joining Sporting Clube de Portugal (now Sporting Lisbon). He played for the club’s different junior squads until he made his first-team debut in 2002.

Ronaldo was a powerful athlete on the field, at 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters) tall. He began as a right-winger before evolving into a free-reined attacking striker. With a slight of foot, he could hypnotize opponents and create enough space for holes in opposing defenses.

Ulliel perished in a skiing accident on January 19, 2022, at the Savoie resort of La Rosière.

Childhood

Christine Ulliel, a runway show producer, and Serge Ulliel, a stylist, raised Ulliel in the Paris neighborhood of Boulogne-Billancourt.

At the age of six, he was attacked by a Doberman and left with a scar on his left cheek due to his effort to ride the dog like a horse. He once joked that the scar enhanced his emotional acting talents since it resembled a dimple, and his obituary in the French daily Libération referred to him as possessing the “most renowned scar in French film.”  Ulliel studied cinematography at the University of Saint-Denis.

Career

Ulliel made his acting debut in Une femme en white, a French television film, while still in high school. André Téchiné, director of Les égarés, spotted him when he was performing at the Cours Florent.  The 2016 Cannes Film Festival included Ulliel.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he started playing in made-for-television films before establishing himself as a film actor in France and starring in his first English-language feature, Hannibal Rising.

He earned a César Award for Most Promising Actor for his role as soldier Manech Langonnet, Tautou’s fiancé, in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s World War I drama A Very Long Engagement in 2004, in which he co-starred with Audrey Tautou.

In January 2007, he and supermodel Doutzen Kroes shared the cover of French Vogue. Ulliel became the face of Chanel’s new Bleu de Chanel men’s fragrance. Martin Scorsese, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, directed the campaign film, which premiered in August 2010. Together with Kate Moss, Ulliel was the face of Longchamp, a French leather and luxury goods brand.

He won a Lumières Award for Best Actor and César and Globe de Cristal Best Actor nominations for his portrayal of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in 2014 biographical film Saint Laurent.

He starred in two films in 2016: It’s Only the End of the World, directed by Xavier Dolan, and The Dancer, directed by Stéphanie Di Giusto, which is an unorthodox biography of American dancer Loie Fuller.

In 2017, he was nominated for the Jury Prize for Best Actor at the Riviera International Film Festival for his role in Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World, alongside co-star Vincent Cassel; the film was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Picture, earning Ulliel a second César Award for Best Actor, as well as second nominations for Best Actor in both the Lumières and Globe de (the latter with Cassel also nominated).

In 2018, he starred with Gérard Depardieu in Guillaume Nicloux’s drama To the Ends of the World, in which he played French soldier Robert Tassen during the First Indochina War.

Ulliel joined the cast of the Disney+ superhero streaming series Moon Knight in July 2021, based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and due out in 2022. Anton Mogart/Midnight Man was the character he played.

Private life

Between 2005 and 2007, Ulliel was with actress Cécile Cassel. He dated Jordane Chantelle from 2008 until 2013 and had a short romance with Charlotte Casiraghi in 2007. Since 2013, Ulliel has been dating Galle Pietri, a French model, and singer. In 2016, they welcomed their first child.

Death

Ulliel was gravely wounded when skiing at the La Rosière resort in Savoie, France, on January 18, 2022, when he collided with another skier at a slope junction and received significant head injuries. He didn’t have his helmet on. Ulliel was taken to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Grenoble Alpes’ trauma center in adjacent La Tronche, where he died the next day at 37.
