THE PHILADELPHIA TIMES (AP) — The Philadelphia Flyers sacked coach Alain Vigneault on Monday after eight straight defeats, two short of tying a team record of ten in a row, and with the franchise still a long way from ending a 47-year Stanley Cup drought.

Philadelphia also let go of assistant coach Michel Therrien, a former NHL head coach. However, assistant coach Mike Yeo was retained and coached the Flyers in their Monday home game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Though a broad search may begin sooner rather than later, general manager Chuck Fletcher focuses on the here and now, starting with Yeo. is not on interviewing candidates and hurrying to choose a head coach,” Fletcher stated ahead of the game. “It’s to help Mike.”

Though the Flyers showed some fight on offense with Yeo watching from the bench, the outcome remained the same on Monday.

Vigneault was hired by the Flyers in April 2019, bringing with him 1,216 games of head-coaching experience. Vigneault has coached the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, and Montreal Canadiens, leading two to the Stanley Cup Final. With the Canucks, he received the Jack Adams Award as the league’s best coach in 2007.

The Flyers made the playoffs in Vigneault’s debut season, and following the postseason seeding tournament in Toronto, Philadelphia was ranked top. However, after defeating the Canadiens in the first round, the Flyers were ousted by the New York Islanders in the second round. Last season, the Flyers finished sixth out of eight teams in their division, missing the playoffs.

The Flyers have been one of the NHL’s greatest disappointments this season. Their most recent setback, a 7-1 loss to Tampa Bay, sealed Vigneault’s fate Sunday night. Michel Therrien, the assistant coach, was also sacked.

The Flyers are 8-10-4 and now sit eighth in the Metropolitan Division. Vigneault had a 147-74-54 record with the Flyers last season, but they did not make the playoffs.

Mike Yeo selected interim coach of the Flyers, who were defeated 7-5 by Colorado on Monday night in his debut, tying a dubious franchise record.

The Flyers are 8-11-4 and now sit eighth in the Metropolitan Division. Vigneault was 74-54-19 with the Flyers last season, missing the playoffs.

Fletcher attempted to blame the team’s current slump on injuries last week, but as the losses mounted, that changed requirements became evident.

“The last ten, we regressed.” “There’s no doubt about that,” he stated last week. We’re not fooling ourselves. We need to improve.”
Vigneault lasted two seasons in Philadelphia and could not steer the Flyers in the proper path this season, after guiding them to the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference on the NHL’s playoff bubble in his first season.

“We’re in a nasty rut right now, and we need to get out of it.” We have another chance next night, and maybe we will do better.”
Instead, the Flyers are attempting to avoid a 10-game losing streak for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

“Last night was a solid illustration that our game wasn’t good enough, and being embarrassed in your own building is not acceptable,” captain Claude                              Giroux said before Monday’s game.

Since his debut with the Flyers in 2007, Giroux has been among the franchise’s lifetime leaders in most offensive categories, having played for coaches John Stevens, Peter Laviolette, Craig Berube, Scott Gordon, Vigneault, Dave Hakstol, and now Yeo.
We must trust that even if another team scores first, we must keep playing our game.

Yeo is up to figure out how to solve the Flyers, at least in the short term. The St. Louis Blues dismissed Yeo in November 2018. After five seasons with the Minnesota Wild, he joined the Blues as an assistant coach in 2016.

Fletcher signed Keith Yandle and Derick Brassard and acquired defenseman Ryan Ellis and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Flyers also signed backup goalkeeper Martin Jones and acquired Cam Atkinson in a trade.

Again, in Philadelphia, the modifications were insufficient to elevate the Flyers to championship contention. The Flyers haven’t reached the Stanley Cup Final since losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
